HotHouse is thrilled to announce the launch of an intriguing new monthly music series: the World Underground. The series joins up-and-coming regional artists with underground legends who established many of the cultural scenes we enjoy today. Local restaurants will also cater authentic cuisine from the countries represented each month.

In the series debut, the World Underground is proud to join the talents of rising vocalist, composer & lyricist Satya with one of Chicago’s most accomplished cultural pioneers DJ Joe Bryl. Both artists have an affinity for the sounds of Brazil and a desire to expand common perceptions on musical norms. They are both intimately involved in Chicago’s music scene and will undoubtedly help shape the cultural road ahead.

SATYA is a fresh and rising vocalist, composer, and lyricist who masterfully unites Brazilian and Indian influences over a Jazz foundation. After performing alongside various groups in Chicago and throughout the world, Satya recently released her solo debut “Seven Blue Seas”. Satya sings in Hindi, Portuguese and English – three languages that broadly represent the history of her native Bombay. Her music is influenced by her deep interest in the works of classic and contemporary Brazilian composers, songwriters and musicians of various genres, her love for the Portuguese language which she has been studying, as well as her time in Brazil. “Seven Blue Seas” pays homage to both her memories of India and Brazil.

Satya was born and raised in Bombay (Mumbai), India where she trained extensively in South Indian classical music. She also maintained an ear for innovative and experimental music and jazz. Satya eventually made her way to Chicago where she began studying jazz with teaching masters, accomplished musicians and writers.

Satya has performed with various groups in Chicago, New York, Portugal, Mumbai and Brazil. She appeared at both the 2005 World Music Festival and the 2007 Chicago Jazz Festival. Satya regularly performs with Las Guitarras de España, Ritwik Banerji Quintet, Matt Geraghty Project, and is a member of the Brown Rice collective of improvising musicians. Satya is an artist filled with talent, depth, and a yearning to continually challenge herself musically. Satya is also an instrumental part of a new generation of performers in Chicago…and the World Underground.

DJ JOE BRYL was named Chicago’s “Most Interesting DJ” by Chicago Tribune. He has worked in the club and entertainment industry for over 20 years and was an original partner in the creation of HotHouse. He was also involved in early days of The Funky Buddha Lounge, setting new standards for nightclubs in Chicago.  Joe was the longtime artistic director at Sonotheque and most recently began curating at The Shrine. Joe is also an accomplished record collector.

DJ Joe Bryl continues to push the envelope on international sounds. He plays a wide range of left-field dance music, ranging from Rare Groove, Latin, Funk, Brazilian, Steppers, African, Acid Jazz & Neo-Soul. Joe has also played an instrumental role in starting many famous DJ events throughout Chicago including the longstanding “Braziliance” which showcased some of the best new underground music from Brazil.

Joe recently returned from a sabbatical in Argentina where he undoubtedly picked up plenty of new tunes. Joe’s passion for music and exposing people to rare international sounds has made Chicago a stronger cultural center. We can’t wait to see what Joe has planned next for Chicago… and the World Underground.
